COMMUNITY STORIES

UT Researchers Develop AI Framework to Prevent Copyrighted Image Replication

Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin have developed a new framework called Ambient Diffusion to address the issue of AI models replicating copyrighted images.

By training AI models on corrupted image-based data, the framework allows for the generation of high-quality samples without the models ever seeing the original source images.

This approach could prove useful in various applications, including scientific and medical research, where uncorrupted data may be expensive or impossible to obtain.

Need-to-know:

  • Ambient Diffusion trains AI models on corrupted image-based data to prevent copyrighted image replication

  • The framework allows for controlling the trade-off between memorization and performance

  • As the level of corruption during training increases, the memorization of the training set decreases

  • The approach could be useful in scientific and medical applications where uncorrupted data is limited

  • The research team included members from UT Austin, UC Berkeley, and MIT

Texas Think Tank Highlights AI's Growing Role in Education and Calls for Regulation

Texas 2036, a non-partisan think tank, is raising concerns about the need for artificial intelligence regulation in schools.

As AI becomes more normalized, it is being used by a growing number of students to complete or assist with their homework.

The organization emphasizes the importance of approaching AI with caution while avoiding overreaction, as it presents both potential risks and benefits in the educational setting.

Need-to-know:

  • 25% of children are using AI tools to complete or help with their homework

  • AI has the potential to be used for individualized tutoring for every student

  • Some professors are adopting open ChatGPT policies for exams to avoid cheating concerns

  • Exams like the STAAR test and MAP assessments partly use AI to grade students

  • Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill to establish an AI advisory council to oversee the development and use of AI by state agencies

AI-Powered Gun Detection System Aims to Enhance School Safety in Texas

Need-to-know:

  • ZeroEyes is a proactive gun detection and response system that uses existing security cameras

  • The platform can detect an exposed gun within 3-5 seconds and send alerts with a picture of the shooter, location, and time

  • About 60% of teenagers and parents are worried about school shootings, and 70% of the American Federation of Teachers say gun violence affects learning

  • Corpus Christi ISD has successfully used ZeroEyes to detect swatting incidents and save valuable resources

  • The technology works in conjunction with established school security practices to provide an additional layer of protection

As school shootings continue to rise, Texas districts are turning to an AI-powered gun detection and response system called ZeroEyes to enhance campus safety.

The platform utilizes existing security cameras to detect exposed guns and alert authorities within seconds.

By providing real-time information about the shooter's location and appearance, ZeroEyes aims to address the issue of gun violence in schools while the broader debates surrounding gun control and mental health persist.
