COMMUNITY STORIES

A federal judge fined a Texas attorney $6,000 after he submitted court briefs generated with AI—complete with made-up legal citations—in an ERISA case.

Why it matters: This marks another wake-up call for professionals misusing AI tools without oversight—especially in high-stakes environments like the legal system.

Need-to-know:

  • The attorney used generative AI to draft three legal briefs.

  • All three included fake citations that were not verified.

  • Filed in Indiana, but the lawyer is based in Texas. Highlights national scrutiny on AI misuse.

Despite vocal community opposition, a new AI data center in rural Hays County is likely to move forward, raising environmental and zoning concerns.

Why it matters: As AI infrastructure expands, Texas counties face mounting tension between tech development and rural preservation—setting the stage for similar battles across the state.

Need-to-know:

  • Residents worry about water use, noise, light pollution, and ecological damage.

  • The center, built by CloudBurst Data Centers, is applying for a flood hazard permit.

  • CloudBurst claims it will recycle water, limit disruption, and preserve nearby wildlife areas.

Thoughts? Should rural areas have more say in where AI infrastructure gets built? Ask a friend too.
