COMMUNITY STORIES

ChatGPT Assists in Rare Diabetes Diagnosis

In a remarkable story showcasing the potential of AI in healthcare, Cooper Myers, a 24-year-old Austin tech worker, used ChatGPT to help diagnose his rare form of diabetes.

  • Initially diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes, Cooper's symptoms didn't align with the usual presentation, prompting him to seek a second opinion from the AI chatbot.

  • ChatGPT suggested MODY (Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young) as a possible diagnosis, which was later confirmed by Cooper's doctor, Dr. Keta Pandit.

  • The correct diagnosis allowed Cooper to manage his condition with daily medication instead of a strict diet and insulin injections.

  • While AI is still a young technology with some risks, this case highlights its potential as a valuable resource when used in conjunction with healthcare professionals.

Texas AI Policy Updates

Texas Establishes Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council to Guide State Policy

  • House Bill 2060, signed into law last year, created the Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council for the state of Texas.

  • The council, co-chaired by Rep. Giovanni Capriglione and Sen. Tan Parker, also includes four members appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott, two of whom are from Austin.

  • The council's primary task is to assess how state agencies are using automated systems, consider the need for a state code of ethics regarding AI, and provide policy recommendations by December 1, ahead of the next legislative session.

  • State agencies have until July 1 to submit automated decision systems inventory reports, detailing their use of AI solutions, which the council will review and summarize for lawmakers.

Experts emphasize the importance of the council's work in addressing potential pitfalls and improving government services through AI, while also ensuring that valuable data generated from AI interactions with the public is not misused.

Students in Texas Using ChatGPT to Cheat on Tests

A recent study by EssayPro found that Texas students are the second most likely in the U.S. to use AI tools for cheating, with an average of 259.2 searches per million population each month.

  • The rise of AI engines like ChatGPT has made it easier for students to generate essays quickly, albeit often generic in nature.

  • AI technology was a major focus at this year's South by Southwest Conference in Austin, with experts discussing the need for safeguards and the potential pros and cons of introducing AI in education.

  • While AI can enhance student work and help generate ideas, overuse may lead to the loss of critical thinking and research skills, as well as plagiarism concerns due to the technology's reliance on existing material and potential for generating fabricated information.

Texas officials, including Gov. Greg Abbott, have established the Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council to address the use of AI technology by state agencies, highlighting the growing concern surrounding AI's impact on various sectors, including education.
